The Flow NewsletterWinter 2010 Edition

Jennifer headshotDear Readers,

I love this time of the year when we celebrate female glass artists from around the world with our annual Women in Glass issue. Our 2010 issue is filled with beautiful and innovative art that is featured in a gallery that includes over 150 of our Ladies in Glass. When we also consider the tutorials for some truly gorgeous projects, a reminder from the folks at The Corning Museum of Glass that female artists have filled an important place in the glass arts through the centuries, and tips from Lisa St. Martin for finding inspiration in out-of-the-way places, I believe we have a fabulous issue that you are sure to enjoy.

This is also a time when we pause to recall the important events that we have shared together over the past year and to realize how fortunate we are to be part of such a caring and sharing community of glass artists. Wil and I want to take this opportunity to offer a huge thank-you to all of those who have supported The Flow and to let you know how much we treasure our relationships with each and every one of you. Our goal is to provide a special place where we can share our tips and techniques with one another and where we can demonstrate how magical the world of glass art really is.

As always . . . Keep your light shining and your torches lit!

Jennifer Menzies

Introducing the 2010 Winner
Of the
Jennifer Umphress
Jennifer Umphresswin10NL
design by Jennifer Umphress

Jennifer considers glass to be the ideal medium, because glass has it all- - -color, dimension, clarity, and reflection. The medium enables her to express her thoughts and feelings in the moment. She has worked with cold glass and other mediums besides lampworking, but once she discovered the rush of creating with constant motion and having no time to think but instead feeling her piece, Jennifer UmphressSp11she was completely captivated.

Fired Up In Faraway Places

A Glass Artist Goes to Ghana

FiredUpInFar-awayPlaces

by Jenney Newtson

I couldn't tell you the specific moment that most captured my imagination at the powder-glass bead factory in Ghana's Volta Region; I'm guessing it was the furnace! I was warned a trip to Africa would change my life. I hoped it would inspire some new colors of patterns. I didn't expect it to change my approach to my tools, or to the glass itself. This technique can be varied by applying more or less lines, dichro lines instead of color or latticino, gold fume instead of or with silver fume, or even flattening the bead on one side for a bracelet. Use your imagination and have fun!

Recycled Glass

by Laurie Nessel

Recycled glass is cheaper and greener than dedicated flameworking rods. There are various forms and sources of recycled glass. This tutorial will demonstrate converting stained glass sheet for beadmaking and then using a CGBeadroller to shape the bead.
