The Flow Newsletter Spring 2012  Edition

Dear Readers,

I can hardly believe that we are beginning a new year of The Flow with this Spring 2012 issue, the Forms of Function. This theme illustrates how glass has the ability, in the hands of the artist, to become something useful rather than merely beautiful or ornamental and shows how utility and practicality can also drive the creative process.

We are proud to continue supporting up-and-coming flameworkers by joining with Glasscraft Inc. and our sister publications, Glass Art and Glass Patterns Quarterly, in announcing the 2011 winner of the Glasscraft Emerging Artist Award, Zachary Jorgenson. Our sincerest congratulations to Zachary and to all of the 2011 nominees who are using their talents to expand the world of glass art.

As always . . . Keep your light shining and your torches lit!

Jennifer Menzies

Glass is a beautiful medium in which to explore the imagery of the dragonfly. I came up with this dragonfly pendant idea using big eyes, translucent wings, and a segmented tail to make it very recognizable, yet also sturdy enough to wear.

The Flow Spring  2011

The Forms of Function

TheFlowSpring20...ver133x172.jpg

The Spring 2012 issue of The Flow illustrates how glass has the ability, in the hands of the artist, to become something useful rather than being merely beautiful or ornamental. You'll find five full-color, step-by-step tutorials including creative chain mail jewelry, a simple chess set from Lewis Wilson, and a striped cane owl sculpture from Milon Townsend. There is also functional glass art from Craig Lewis and nontraditional techniques for creating a twisted dichroic stem goblet from Phil Sunding. The Work of Zachary Jorgenson, Glasscraft Emerging Artist Award winner for 2011, is also featured. A portrait of flameworking artist, Deborah Carlson, coverage of important industry events, and answers to your kiln questions round out this great issue.
