Building a Strong Foundation

This workshop is about exploring functional forms as you build a strong foundation of fundamental glassblowing skills. Starting with simple drinking vessels, we’ll cover gathering, marvering, working on center, body position, and movement through the shop. From there we’ll move on to bowls, plates, vases, and other more challenging forms and work through more advanced techniques, including optic molds, color applications, bit work, and handles. This workshop will be about steady improvement that will enable you to produce functional objects for use and enjoyment. All levels. Hot glass studio.

Wesley Fleming and Emilio Santini
Bugs, Figures, Plants, and Beyond

Using soft glass, you will learn through demonstration, discussion, and practice to sculpt at the torch using the “Italian Technique.” We’ll show you how to create bugs, flowers, bodies, and fantastical objects without continuously reheating finished parts of the object, working from one side of your creation to the other as it cools. You will learn how to prepare components and assemble them cold in the flame without cracking. We’ll cover heat control, shaping, fine details, and proper annealing as we work through the meditative process that is flameworking. All levels. Flameworking studio.

To Infinity!

This workshop is for advanced beginners or more experienced students looking to refine their technique. Repetition is the key to refinement, and by focusing on the basics, we will re-examine our body movements to optimize our workflow and outcomes without overworking the material. Glassblowing is a team endeavor, and together we will break the process into parts and refine each step. Students will leave with a greater understanding of glass, heat management, and form refinement, setting them up for success. Advanced beginning level; at least one previous glassblowing workshop required. Hot glass studio.

The Anti-Purist Rapture

This workshop is a two-for-one deal: a sculpting workshop in the hot-glass studio and a mixed-media workshop in the classroom. In the hotshop students will make new pieces using bit working, hot assemblage, torch working, and powder pattern pick-ups. In the classroom we will cover various adhesives and coatings used to construct mixed-media assemblages. Students should bring materials they are familiar with, including found objects, to inspire mixed-media work. Our aim is to collectively think outside the object-making box. We will encourage a questioning process to make sure that hot glass—or any other medium, for that matter—works for you, the artist, and not the other way around. Students should be interested in sharing an experimental environment. Some hot glass experience will be helpful, but this workshop is open to all levels. Hot glass studio.

Collaborating artists making mixed-media/glass sculpture, installation, and public art projects; United States Artists Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany Award; Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant; 20 solo museum shows, including a touring retrospective under the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino; participated in five biennials.

From Shop to Table

The glass studio and the dinner table both tell stories about craft, design, tradition, history, culture, and ritual. Both can be gathering places that create lasting communities. In this workshop, we will explore the potential of sculpture, installation, design, and video using glass, found materials, and food. Working in the hot and cold glass studios, we will experiment with blowing, hot sculpting, mold blowing, cane, cold working, and mixed-media processes. Lectures and demonstrations will present strategies for new applications of traditional techniques. We will focus on expanding our community and engaging larger audiences through a culminating, participatory art “dinner party” involving a glass installation made over the duration of the workshop. Please join us for an unforgettable experience. All levels. Hot glass studio.

Photographing Your Work: Documentation for Artists

Photographic records are essential to every art practice. They can describe a work, provide an exhibition view, supply installation instructions, ensure accurate color for print reproduction, or communicate the character of a practice. They can also express an aesthetic and convey a narrative. This workshop considers the many contexts in which these images are made and used. We will work digitally and explore the technical requirements for quality pictures. Demonstrations will cover camera control, natural and artificial lighting, and post-production workflows, including color correction, retouching, file output, and storage. We will cover everything you need to get the best images of your work from the conditions and equipment you’re working with, whether you have a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or cell phone. This workshop is for any art/craft practitioner wanting to photograph their work. All levels. Photography studio.

Color and Form

In this workshop we will design works using a palette of colors made in Penland’s color furnace. These colors will create parameters for the design and form of our sculpture and functional work. A mix and match approach to making work will let us focus on our conversation and analysis around basic principles of design, refining proportions, ergonomics, and how process can inspire concepts. We will cover both blown and solid forms. Collaboration is highly encouraged. All levels. Hot glass studio.

Kiln Casting: Combining Digital and Traditional

Experimentation is the key to broadening how we approach our studio practice. This workshop will foster experimentation by combining traditional kilncasting with Rhino 3D computer modeling software, 3D printing, and 3D scanning, facilitating a hybrid approach to making. Through demonstrations, discussions, and research, students will be encouraged and supported as they develop individual projects using new technology and kilncasting. We will also cover rubber and plaster investment mold making, wax working, and firing/annealing schedules. All levels. Kiln studio.

Reheated and Plated

This workshop will use the fundamental processes associated with pastorale plate and graal blank pickups as a starting point for developing traditional and experimental glass objects in the hotshop. Rather than focusing on working directly and immediately from the furnace, this workshop will be about preparing components and then heating or reheating them in the hotshop to create finished forms. We will first address traditional approaches to cane, murrine, and graal techniques and then move into the possibilities of working with experimental parts, flat glass, commercial and recycled glass, and even found glass objects in the hotshop. We will also consider what it might look like to work in the hotshop without immediate access to a furnace. All levels. Hot glass studio.

Drawn to Glass

This workshop will examine methods of drawing and painting within layers of fused glass. We will begin with demonstrations of drawing with Bullseye powders (frit), using high-fire enamels with brushes and dip pens, and sifting frit through stencils to make repeatable patterns. This will be followed by a short class project using these techniques. Once students are comfortable with the process, they will begin self-directed projects, outlining a plan for each layer of glass, testing ideas with experiments and samples, and learning the kiln schedules needed to make it all happen. Students may focus on abstract or representational imagery and may cut stencils or trace to aid in creating their designs. All levels. Kiln studio (glass).
