Welcome to another exciting marble and paperweight issue from The Flow. While you're trying to beat the summer heat, we know that you'll still want to keep things your studio hot! The tutorials from five of flameworking's finest-Milon Townsend, Drew Fritts, Josh Mazet, Ken Schneidereit, and our own Wil Menzies-are designed to help you do just that as you take your skills and creativity to a new level. You'll also find inspiration from renowned artist and educator, Paul Stankard, who in his own words has been "cajoling glass" for fifty years as well as from the thirteen artists who are represented in the marble gallery and the elegant paperweight display from Victor Trabucco.

 

The Flow has always sought to provide a bond among members of the lampworking community. It also provides a resource for making  new techniques and insights available to artists the world over-for everyone from the experienced flameworker to those of you who are just beginning to discover the thrill of creating in hot glass. The magazine has continued to grow since its inception and now has the largest subscription base of any flameworking periodical. We're happy to hear from our subscribers that they read every issue of The Flow cover to cover, share it with other artists, keep their copies for future reference, and can't wait until the next issue comes out for more great ideas. In the midst of this digital age in which we live, I'd say that's a huge accomplishment.

 

Printed media still has a very important place in the scheme of things. Undeniably, the Internet provides a quick fix for finding info, but what's there today can just as easily be gone tomorrow. Print media, on the other hand, offers a permanence that keeps on giving and a very satisfying physical interaction that you just can't get online. Studies have shown that readers are more engaged when reading printed materials and that print media can create a lasting impression that might otherwise be ignored. What better place to share the tips and tricks with other flameworkers that you have learned while creating your own glass art treasures.
