The Flow Newsletter Fall 2012  Edition

Dear Readers,

November 8-10, 2012, marks ten years since Lewis Wilson's 2002 Flame Off, where

fifty-seven contestants eagerly gathered in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

At that first flame off ten years ago, a fledgling publication introduced a small thirty-two-page "magazine" for lampworkers. It was a proud moment for Wil and me to release The Flow- - - A Lampworkers' Journal. There was a need for a full-color magazine to showcase the growing lampworking movement. We envisioned a journal to showcase, educate, and connect lampworkers of all types. Our publication was the first to include pipes alongside more traditional art glass. Anyone who has been in the game for ten-plus years has witnessed the acceptance of pipe makers as artists. It is a pleasure to feature a gallery that showcases beads, marbles, sculptures, and pipes.

This journey began as a dream-something that would manifest creativity and continue to inspire us as artists. Our community continues to inspire us, in turn, with the many talented and dedicated people who contribute. Thanks to everyone for having faith in and seeing a need for The Flow. We wanted our magazine to be a voice for the glassblowing community. You- - -our readers, contributing artists, advertisers, our family- - -have helped us make that happen. Can you believe that I used to worry that we would run out of articles to print? After ten years, I have realized that glass is so infinite in its possibilities, that it's not going to happen any time soon.

As always . . . Keep your light shining and your torches lit!

The Flow Fall 2012

Narrative Art

TheFlowFall2012...163x211(1).jpg

The Fall 2012 issue of The Flow reminds us that the concept of the flame off competition for lampworking artists was inaugurated ten years ago in November 2002 by Lewis Wilson and that The Flow was born out of that experience. This issue also brings readers six full-color, step-by-step tutorials that demonstrate using incalmo techniques to create dishes and medallions, making skull and barrel beads for Día de los Muertos jewelry, layering glass colors, fashioning pens, and making an imploded jellyfish marble. There are also loads of articles on how artists are inspired by poetry and the things in their everyday lives plus tips for having a well-organized studio. Bead artist, Jami Hamilton, and sculptural artist, Nathan Adami, are also featured as the latest nominees for the Glasscraft Emerging Artist Award. News on important flameworking events plus answers to your kiln questions round out this great issue.
